Things to Consider when Choosing a Therapist

Read Time:5 Minute, 12 Second

When you decide to get help and see a therapist, you’ve taken a big step forward when it comes to your mental health journey. And while admitting that you need a professional’s advice means you’ve done some of the hard work, it doesn’t mean it’s smooth sailing from here on forward.

To make the most of your therapy sessions, you need to find the right therapist. However, everyone will have different things that they look for in a therapist depending on their situation. That’s why we’ve put together a list of things you need to consider when choosing a therapist. Hopefully, this will guide you toward the right decision.

Do you want online or face-to-face therapy?

Traditionally, therapy is done at your therapist’s office. Many people may still prefer this method of therapy, but it’s important to note that it’s not your only option. Nowadays, there are various forms of online therapy.

You may prefer to have online consultations because of the pandemic, or it may simply work better with your schedule to be able to have a therapy session from home.

Either way, you need to consider which version of therapy will benefit you the most and be the most convenient for you. If you are interested in online therapy, have a look at Talkspace therapists

Do you need a specialist?

Just as with doctors, you can get a therapist who can help you with your mental health in general, or you can decide to see a therapist who specializes in certain things.

If you just want some help with feeling better or dealing with something, the odds are that any therapist will be able to help. But if you have more serious struggles such as mental illnesses, you may want to see a therapist who specializes in it and can thus offer you more tailored advice.

Where are they located?

If you find a great therapist but they’re far from you, you will need to decide whether it’s worth it to make the long journey or whether you would rather work with a therapist closer to you.

Ideally, your therapist shouldn’t be too far, so that you can easily reach your sessions and have more frequent therapy sessions.

However, if you want to work with a specific therapist no matter where they are based, that’s fine too. After all, there are plenty of ways for you to make a long commute productive

What is your budget?

Not all therapists will charge the same amount for a session. It will depend on things like how much experience they have as well as whether they specialize in something.

In an ideal world, everyone would be able to afford therapy without having to worry about how they will pay for it, but that is sadly not the case for many people. Aside from that, your government or medical aid may not pay for therapy, and if you have regular sessions, it can add up to a lot.

If possible, you should try to find a therapist who isn’t too expensive so that your finances won’t be as affected. That being said, your mental health should be a priority, which means that you may need to make certain sacrifices so that you can pay for your therapy.

Are they qualified?

Unfortunately, some people may want to take advantage of vulnerable or struggling people, and they may try to parade as therapists even if they aren’t qualified.

You should always aim to get a therapist who is qualified to help you since you will need to trust their advice. Choosing a therapist isn’t something to be taken lightly – your mental health is important, so you need to ensure that someone is qualified before you trust them with sensitive information. There are also a few essential skills needed for a career in counseling, so be sure to keep an eye out for them when looking for a therapist.

Do they feel like the right fit?

It can be hard to share your feelings and experiences with someone who is essentially a stranger, no matter how qualified they may be.

This is why you need to make sure that you will feel comfortable with your therapist and that they are a good fit for you. Of course, the easiest way of doing this will be to go for a therapy session and see how you feel afterward, but many therapists will also have websites where they explain their outlooks and philosophies. This can then help you determine if their values align with yours or not.

What are your needs?

There are many reasons why people may decide to visit a therapist, and this means that people have different needs when it comes to therapy.

You need to figure out what your needs are, and then look for a therapist who will be able to help you with them. For example, some people may need years of therapy to help them deal with childhood trauma, while others may prefer just going for a few sessions to help them when they’re feeling stressed

In conclusion

Your mental health is important, which is why it’s so brave to get help when you need it. However, you also need to accept that not everyone will be able to help you with your struggles – you will need to find the right therapist.

There are a few things that can help you do this, and this post discussed a few of them. While these things are important, you need to keep in mind that it may still take you some time to find the perfect therapist for you. If you have had a few sessions with a therapist and you don’t think they are the right fit, there’s no harm in having a look around and trying to find another therapist.

Similarly, as your situation changes, you may find that you need to find different therapists for different phases of your life. Getting help is so important, so don’t give up on finding a therapist – keep looking until you can find someone who can help you.
