Nest celebrates anniversary with Power of Craft campaign

Bowls like this one are made by women weavers in Rwanda from strands of sisal wrapped around bunches of sweetgrass. All of the profits are invested back into vocational and leadership training for the women who make the products.

NEW YORK – Nonprofit organization Nest is celebrating its 15th anniversary by creating the Power of Craft campaign.

As part of the campaign, each new product that is made celebrates a value that is core to Nest’s journey and is handmade by a member of the company’s artisan and maker guild.

All purchases from the campaign will provide impact to the artisan who created it and will support the company’s goal to create a better world through craft.

Rebecca van Bergen founded Nest in 2006 to support the growth and development of craft. And today, the company believes its work has unlocked the power of handicrafts to improve the world.

“We’ve seen how a handwoven cocoon chair has created a safe haven for the women in high-risk areas of El Salvador who craft it,” the company said on its website. “Each handwoven sweetgrass basket from South Carolina’s Lowcountry preserves a 300-year-old tradition. And, hand-thrown ceramic bowls are supporting the re-entry into society of formerly incarcerated individuals.”

Prices for the pieces range from $100 to $5,000 and can be ordered directly off the Nest website.
