How To Prepare CSAT For UPSC Prelims Exam?

Millions of graduates take the UPSC examination every year, intending to make it to the civil services of India. While the syllabus seems relatively easy at first glance, cracking a competitive exam to attain a good rank remains a distant dream for many. It is most important to get cracking right away as the UPSC examination is not too far away now.

You must pass the UPSC Prelims and move on to the mains before qualifying for the coveted post of an IAS. You will have to sit for two separate papers for the Preliminary exams. General Studies 1 will test you for knowledge, whereas General Studies 2 includes Civil Service Aptitude Test, known by the acronym CSAT.

CSAT Syllabus

You will be tested for the following and get qualifying marks:-

  • Comprehension
  • Interpersonal skills that include communication skills
  • Logical reasoning & ability
  • Problem-solving and decision-making
  • General mental ability
  • Numerals, including relations between numbers, classification, and magnitude. This will be of Class X level.
  • Data Interpretations with charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc. This will be of Class X level too.

CSAT Preparation Tips

Admittedly, you are familiar with the things included in the syllabus. Yet, it pays to prepare diligently for each section to keep your score high. The best way to tackle each part of the syllabus would be to try the following:-

  • Mental Ability– Go through the sample questions and try to solve each independently without glancing at the solved answers. You may read the NCERT textbooks while checking the Latest Pattern Test Series included in BYJU’s Exam Prep.
  • Logical reasoning– Remember that your thinking ability is tested here. It is essential to understand the question before attempting to answer them. While it can be your greatest asset or cause you to lose precious time as you keep wondering about the right answer. 
  • Remain aware of your weaknesses and practice until you are perfect. You would do well to time yourself as you solve the questions during practice. 
  • Comprehension– Comprehension need not be a worrying factor when you have inculcated a habit of reading. Do read anything that comes your way while studying for the UPSC examination, particularly Group II or CSAT. Your ability to read through a passage speedily enhances your chances of saving time and obtaining a high score in the examination.
