5 Benefits of Owning a Folding Mobility Scooter for Travel

When traveling with disabilities, all we want is an option for mobility that makes traveling with as little hassle as possible and as much freedom as possible. Is that so hard? Well, some modes of transport really do make it that hard, but thankfully, folding travel scooters are a holy grail option in the world of mobility! That’s not a complete exaggeration either.

Below are 5 ways folding mobile scooters make our lives easier and make us wonder why we didn’t get one of them to begin with. Get ready to put the bulky clunker you’ve been trying to live with up for sale.

They’re Compact for Versatility

The folding mobility scooter was designed to be easier for those who travel and those who just need something a little smaller than the trailer-sized vehicles they have now or were looking at. Folding scooters get rid of extra features that aren’t necessary while traveling, such as a bulky trunk. Travel folding scooters don’t take up as much space as a regular scooter so, with the smaller footprint, they can be used just as effectively in tighter areas, like local shops, as they are on wider walkways.

Their compact size is especially useful if you want to use your travel scooter for more than the occasional vacation. If you live in a tiny or cluttered apartment, having a smaller scooter with a greater turning radius is an excellent way to make sure your ride will take up as little space as possible.

They’re Simple to Use

We know scooters aren’t the most complicated vehicles in the world, and that’s what we want! All we need is a dial for choosing our speed, the brake, and most crucially, the horn! Oh, and a way to steer. That’s important too. While folding scooters make sure they aren’t over-encumbered with a million gadgets and buttons, they will still give us the horn.

I don’t know if any folding scooters will allow us to back up instead of always having to move forward, but using the kind of scooters with wheels that are set closer together, or those that have three wheels instead of four will at least give us tighter turns.

It’s great having transport that doesn’t come with an instruction manual as thick as a notepad. When we use a folding scooter, we don’t want to have to think, “did I put the brake on?”

They’re Light and Easy to Transport

When we have to use mobile transport, the last thing we want is something that will break our spines trying to lift or even move. Regular scooters can weigh anywhere between 220-400lbs! You end up HAVING to disassemble your scooter to store it and even then, some pieces can weigh 60lbs by themselves.

That’s one reason why foldable scooters are so great! Most of them weigh less than 60lbs total. It is a much more manageable weight to bear if you have to carry it. What’s even better is that the folding function of these scooters will let you cart around the scooter like a piece of luggage! And not a sprained back insight.

Being foldable will also allow you to pack it in your vehicle’s trunk when traveling instead of having to buy a trailer or scooter carrier for the back of your car. You know airline staff is going to appreciate how easy your scooter is to transport and tuck in with the rest of the cargo.

Specially designed travel scooters will usually disassemble into small pieces that are easier to tote around and are, again, not 60 or 70 lbs of metal piping and steel bolts.

There are Automatic Folding Options

Most foldable transports, like wheelchairs, will only be manually folded. That’s not so bad, as many of them just require pulling on a tab on the seat of the wheelchair, then getting the wheels off, and finally tucking in the feet rests. I say that’s not so bad, but not all of us who need mobile transport have the strength to manually fold something like that.

That’s why it’s so great that there are the best folding mobility scooters with automatic folding. The Transformer scooter is one such folding scooter, and all you have to do is push a button and it will start folding itself up! It’s the same in reverse too. Just push the button to have the scooter unfold itself.

It’s only fair to warn you that scooters this easy to use aren’t the cheapest things on the market, but oh! do they make life easy!

They’re Cheaper Than WheelChairs

If there’s one thing disabled men and women, healthcare facilities, and insurance companies all understand in common, it’s that mobile transports are super expensive! Usually.

Folding wheelchairs, for instance, are quite expensive pieces of machinery. They can cost anywhere from $1,000 to almost $7,000! Nothing like paying for a used car again. The usual non-foldable scooters will range from $800 to almost $4,000, which is a little better. Finally, the foldable scooters range between $700 to $3,000.

That’s a considerable amount of savings on its own, but as we said earlier, you won’t have to buy extra equipment for your car to take them along, which saves you hundreds, automatically.

Conclusion

Those were five of the benefits you can expect to have with foldable mobility scooters, though I’m sure you’ll discover more. No one can deny that they have wonderful uses and are perfect for scouting about town or for exploring new places.

This article doesn’t deny that there are some benefits to the other transports that the foldable scooters just don’t have, but for those of us who want something that won’t get stuck and handles corners a little better, these foldable scooters are hard to beat. Either way, happy riding!
